Chapter 11

Lasso leaned back against his saddle, full of beans and corn bread. The fire had died to embers, and while the temperature wasn’t as warm as he’d like, the night wouldn’t be unbearably cold. And he was thankful for that, especially for the old man and the children’s sake.

Mollie and Jennie settled the children inside the wagon, puppies and all. Stormie whined to be allowed to sleep with the children, and Mollie finally relented. Earlier, they’d rigged up a canvas skirt around the wagon for Mollie, Jennie, and Reverend Vincent, while another piece of canvas staked alongside made a serviceable lean-to for Jedediah and himself. All in all, the entire lot of them would pass the night in comfort as long as the weather cooperated.

Once everyone was settled, Mollie sank down beside him with a weary sigh. Lasso reached for the coffeepot and refilled her cup.

She nursed the tin cup between her hands. “We’re not making very good time.”

“On horseback, I could make it, but another day or two like today will make it iffy.” He sipped his coffee, wanting to offer reassurance, but he couldn’t lie. “What if your grandpa and I ride ahead?”

“It’ll never work.” She shook her head. “Grandpa couldn’t ride that far, and he’s convinced they won’t give him the land anyway.”

“He’s also convinced they won’t give it to you, either.”

Mollie didn’t answer, just stared at the fire, lost in her own thoughts. Lasso added a couple of sticks of wood to the fire and banked it for the night. Mollie tossed the remains of her coffee to the side, stood, and pulled her shawl close to ward off the chill.

“Get some sleep, Mollie. We’ve got another long day ahead of us.” Lasso brushed past her, intending to check on the horses before turning in.

“What if he’s right?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “What will we do if they won’t let us have the land?”

Her eyes sought and held his, tears shimmering in their depths.

Unable to stand the sight of her tears, Lasso tugged her to his side. She came willingly, her head cushioned against his coat. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close, resting his chin on the top of her head. Nothing had ever felt better than holding Mollie, comforting her. But holding her wouldn’t solve the problem.

And he was fresh out of ideas.
